The malicious software appeared to be a variant of an existing ransomware family known as Petya, which also has borrowed key features from a major ransomware attack in May when a similar virus known as WannaCry or WannaCrypt spread to computers in more than 150 countries.

According to The New York Times, Kevin Johnson, chief executive of cyber security firm Secure Ideas said: "Cyber attacks can simply destroy us".

More than 30 members paid into the bitcoin account associated with the Cyber attack.

The vulnerability in Windows software used by Eternal Blue was patched by Microsoft in March, but as the WannaCry attacks demonstrated, hundreds of thousands of groups around the world failed to properly install the fix.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company's latest antivirus software should protect against the attack.

The malware popped up in government systems in Ukraine earlier this week and it's since disabled computers at more than 80 companies in Ukraine and Russian Federation. The total number of attacks was unknown.

Law enforcement and cybersecurity experts agree that victims should never pay ransoms for such attacks.

The incident was the second of such attack in two months.

He also said that tech security firms' stock prices will rise as witnessed by Sophos and Trend Micro back in May.

Gibbons: Osuna not feeling well
LF Steve Pearce, who bruised his right knee banging into the wall Wednesday, did not play for the second consecutive game. Troy Tulowitzki homered off former Long Beach State teammate Vargas to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the second.

In a statement, the White House National Security Council said there was now no risk to public safety.

Factory workers "weren't sure what it was but, as the night's gone on, they've realised there's been some significant attacks around the world", Short said.

The NSA did not respond to a request for comment.

EternalBlue was in a batch of hacking tools leaked earlier this year that are believed to have belonged to the U.S. National Security Agency.

The NSA said it is moderately confident that WannaCry was the work of North Korean hackers. Both countries' governments deny charges they are involved in hacking. A Wellsville, Ohio, woman at one of its hospitals to have her gallbladder removed said she noticed computer monitors off and nurses scurrying around with stacks of paperwork. One consumer lender, Home Credit, had to suspend client operations. European firms which are hit by this attack include Saint-Gobain, WPP, Evraz, Rosneft and others.

The ransomware attacks that have been experienced over the past year are increasingly making it clear the ease with which attackers are becoming a regular thing in almost all nations.

Western Pennsylvania's Heritage Valley Health System's entire network was shut down by a cyberattack on Tuesday, according to local media reports.

Further analysis by Russian-based Kaspersky Labs instead concludes that the guilty ransomware was completely brand new, although it does have some commonality with Petya. Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said the attack was "unprecedented" but "vital systems haven't been affected".
