Tropical Storm Calvin lashes tourist spots in south Mexico

The depression could strengthen into Tropical Storm Calvin on Monday. Current Status. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) estimates that the center of Calvin is at approximately 16.18°N, 96.18°W, about 45 mi (70 km) NNE of Puerto Angel Mexico. NASA's Aqua satellite captured a look at the depression just prior to its classification as a tropical storm.

At 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Calvin was located near latitude 16.3 North, longitude 96.3 West.

The center of Calvin will be moving inland along the coast of southeastern Mexico overnight into early Tuesday morning. As showers and storms continue to impact the area, flooding will be a concern through Tuesday.

This system is no threat to the USA mainland.

Tropical storm warnings have been posted for parts of Mexico's Pacific coastline. "Maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with higher gusts", the NHC said in a statement.

Forecasters said Calvin is expected to dump 6 to 12 inches (150 to 300 millimeters) of rain across Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chiapas states, with higher isolated accumulations possible, threatening landslides and flash floods.
