Minecraft On PlayStation 4 Won't Support Cross-Platform Play

14 June 2017, 06:45 | Candice Butler

Dubbed the "Better Together" update, the changes to the immensely popular game were announced at Microsoft's media briefing ahead of this week's E3 expo in Los Angeles. All the Bedrock versions now are simply being called "Minecraft", while the Java-based versions will be called Minecraft Java Edition. Today, there are multiple versions of the game across various platforms-PC, consoles, mobile, VR, and so on-and they are not compatible with each other. (For example: if you buy the Greek Mythology pack on Nintendo Switch, you'll also own it on the mobile, Xbox One and Windows 10 Editions too - no extra charge). During Microsoft's E3 2017 presentation, Mojang announced two major changes coming to the open-world creative building game. Minecraft for Xbox One or Nintendo Switch owners will get a new update for free.

According to the hype, this will happen later this summer as a part of a big update planned by Minecraft which was whimsically named "Better Together".

As Ars highlights, Microsoft also revealed that it planned to unify all versions of the game across all platforms using the Xbox Live service. Now that versions of the game on consoles like Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are set to move to Bedrock, the Better Together update could make it significantly easier for more users to play more often. That means Xbox One players can play with Switch gamers, with Android or iPad players joining in.

Tropical Storm Calvin lashes tourist spots in south Mexico
The center of Calvin will be moving inland along the coast of southeastern Mexico overnight into early Tuesday morning. EDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Calvin was located near latitude 16.3 North, longitude 96.3 West.

Finally, public in-game servers will come with the update along with a server browser to let you find servers where you can join in with other players.

The new update also means that any downloadable content will be available across all devices. These in-game servers are already widely-used but there will now be official support, with new partnerships between Minecraft and its creators • initial partners include Lifeboat, InPvP, Mineplex and CubeCraft.

It's different from Minecraft Realms, which are privately cloud-hosted servers available for smaller groups. While the pixellated art style of the game will remain, the "Super Duper Graphics Pack", will overhaul the game's lighting and add a lot more in the way of particle effects.
