Bill Maher apologizes on 'Real Time': "I did a bad thing"
10 June 2017, 05:34 | Sue Hudson
'Comedians are a Special Kind of Monkey!'
Maher acknowledged he has said that, but also made the point that he has also said in the past that there are things that people should apologize for. But apologizing for using a racial slur was appropriate because "for black folks, that word - I don't care who you are - has caused pain".
There was tons of anticipation surrounding Ice Cube's appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday night, the show's first airing since Maher said the N-word during an interview with Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse last week. This week's episode had a totally different tone, as he invited Ice Cube on to discuss the incident.
"Unfortunately, this week I find that I'm the news maker", Maher said, greeting Dyson.
Maher asked Dyson, a longtime friend, "to school me". "I made it. I'm done".
"That's a great place to begin, Bill", Dyson said. "When I hear my homies say it, it don't feel like venom, when I hear a white person say it, it feel like that knife stabbin' me, even if they don't mean it".
"I'm not here to do that. I'm not that big of an a-hole".
Maher also gave his support to Kathy Griffin, who caused outrage by posing for an image holding a bloody-looking mask that resembled Donald Trump's head.
"There is a lot of bulls- apologizing in America, and I am against that", Maher said. But he pointed to her case and his as examples of where comedians went too far.

The backlash against Bill Maher's racial slur was quick and brutal, with many people, including Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson and musician/activist Chance the Rapper, pressuring HBO to take the comedian off the air.
Rapper and actor Ice Cube didn't let the host off as easily, jokingly telling him, "I knew you were gonna f-- up sooner or later. Is this a political show or is it a show about jokes?"
Check out the exchange between Maher and Ice Cube above. Maher immediately disagreed with Cube's perspective, suggesting any "black" jokes were "against" racists.
Maher made headlines last week when, during a conversation with Republican Sen.
"Comedians are a special kind of monkey", was Maher's follow-up.
"So to speak", Dyson responded as the audience laughed nervously.
"We need to get to the root of the psyche", he continued. That's what we're always thinking.
