Massive waves smashed over a promenade in Cape Town's Sea Point and Green Point areas, covering it in a blanket of foam.

Knysna, a town of 77,000 people 500 kilometres (310 miles) east of Cape Town on South Africa's famed Garden Route, was worst hit as firefighters battled to quell 26 fires along the tourist trail.

"We've never seen fires of this nature".

THE storm that has and is now raging through the Western Cape and has caused havoc along the Garden Route, will fortunately not affect the Eastern Cape.

"To date between 8,000 and 10,000 Knysna inhabitants have been safely evacuated".

According to the newspaper, people in the Whale Rock and Longships areas, near Robberg, were being evacuated.

In Cape Town, about 827 informal settlement structures were damaged, wither due to flooding and or roofs which were blown off by gale-force winds.

The expected influx of claims may not push the bigger property and casualty insurers into losses for the year, but companies like Zurich Insurance South Africa and Auto & General Insurance may struggle, Adrian Cloete, analyst at PSG Wealth, said in Cape Town.

The weather also caused chaos throughout the city, knocking out electricity and cancelling flights and rail services.

Schools which were closed on Wednesday will reopen on Thursday, he said. Some 2000 people across the city are receiving humanitarian relief.

We have resources from as far as Cape Town. On Wednesday, authorities urged residents to capture rain from the storm in containers for flushing toilets and other needs.
