New Zealand capsize throws Britain America's Cup life-line

08 June 2017, 02:15 | Sue Hudson

America's Cup action was postponed due to high winds on Wednesday with all four challenger play-off semi-final races moved back to Thursday in Bermuda.

Sir Ben Ainslie's syndicate suffered damage to the wing in the opening race as they rounded the leeward gate, forcing them to retire from the opening race of the challenger semi-finals.

The two boats were just through the start line when Team New Zealand nose-dived into the water.

However, strong winds forecast for Wednesday mean racing may not go ahead and will give Team NZ and extra 24 hours to fix the boat.

Thursday's first race begins at 5:08am.

Burling said: "We will bounce back from this, as team this will really pull us together".

Team New Zealand merely had to start the second race and the race committee immediately black-flagged it, giving the Kiwis a 2-0 lead in the best-of-9 series.

Patty Jenkins Wants to Return for Contemporary Wonder Woman 2
After 19 superhero films starring men, what did moviegoers think of a female-fronted flick? Wonder Woman is in theaters Friday. To say that Time Warner's ( TWX ) Warner Bros . division has had a mixed start with its DC Extended Universe would be kind.

"We'll bounce back from this but right now we are still assessing the damage", New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling said. Artemis Racing struggled to control their boat, at one point in their second race sailing off the course completely and incurring a penalty from which they could not recover.

As race two started, Emirates Team New Zealand capsized, resulting in Land Rover BAR being awarded the race win.

However, the tides turned on leg three of seven, as a perfectly executed manoeuvre from Dean Barker saw him pass Nathan Outteridge as SoftBank Team Japan snatched the lead heading into gate three.

Looking forward, there could be some welcome respite for Team New Zealand in their bid to get their boat seaworthy again.

Mr Murray had a slideshow presentation showing wind data at the time of Team New Zealand's crash was 21.7 knots - well inside the raceable start limit of 24 knots. "We felt we were in for a real battle today and obviously it was a bit of a shame there wasn't much of a battle". In the buildup to the 2013 America's Cup, British Olympic star Andrew "Bart" Simpson was killed when Artemis Racing's 72-foot catamaran broke apart during a test run on San Francisco Bay.
