About 10.40pm United Kingdom time (9.40am NZ time), reports filtered through of a van leaving the road at London Bridge and hitting pedestrians.

This incident comes just days before Britain's general election on June 8, and less than two weeks after a suicide bombing in Manchester killed 22 people, including children, and injured more than 100.

The London Ambulance Service said at least 20 injured people had been taken to six hospitals, and British media said several people had been killed.

Another witness, who gave his name as Alessandro, told BBC Radio that he saw a van strike several people on London Bridge.

According to BBC News, at least one person has died as a result of the stabbing incident.

London's Metropolitan Police said armed officers were at two scenes - on the bridge and the nearby Borough Market, a busy area of restaurants and bars. Iniitial reports had come in reporting trouble at a third site, in the Vauxhall area, but police later said it was unrelated to the first two attacks.

Authorities are also working a second incident at Borough Market, which is not far from London Bridge.

"The incident at #Vauxhall is a stabbing and is not connect to the incidents at #LondonBridge & #BoroughMarket".

UPDATE 6:43 p.m.: Prime Minister Theresa May says London incident being treated as a "potential act of terrorism".

"One of them had a big knife, then he came in and walked around the restaurant, I guess they just kind of stabbed anyone that they saw and knocked things on the ground and then we just hid".

And in the popular food market in south London, witnesses said they saw a man with a large blade. "I feel sick", Ben Leo said in Twitter.

Trump also used the incident to promote his proposed travel ban, which has been blocked by federal courts.

The Daily Mail reports that witnesses saw three men, described as being "of Mediterranean origin", jump out of the van and began "randomly stabbing people" along Borough High Street with 12-inch long knives.

Up to 20 people are feared to be injured after a van reportedly ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge.

In March, a British convert to Islam ran down people with a vehicle on Westminster Bridge, killing four, then stabbed a policeman to death outside Parliament.
