Bloomberg says US does not need Washington to fulfil Paris agreement

03 June 2017, 07:23 | Candice Butler

Thirty cities, three states, more than 80 university presidents, and more than 100 companies are part of a growing group intending to uphold the Paris Agreement, the climate-change accord that President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the USA would be exiting.

The 2015 pact involved 195 countries agreeing to limit carbon emissions.

For example, Trump said during his announcement that the USA would lose $3 trillion in GDP because of the agreement, citing a report from National Economic Research Associates Economic Consulting.

But he said that the poorest nations, from Afghanistan to Zambia, had no plans to quit the Paris Agreement.

The reaction around the world to Mr. Trump's decision was swift. "It's the most significant geopolitically". "But I'm not sure we can believe what he's saying", McNally said of Trump.

With Trump seeking to renegotiate the climate accord, the prospects of which remain highly unclear, USA sub-national bodies have committed to sticking to the parameters of the Paris agreement.

LeBron James breaks Michael Jordan's playoff scoring record
Jordan was in his rearview mirror and still James deflected the attention like a kick-out to an open shooter in the corner. James also described his pursuit of Jordan's impeccable legacy in the sport as a "personal goal of mine" on Thursday.

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank on Friday criticized President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, months after the sports apparel company founder drew heavy criticism for praising his administration.

Trump said the US could re-enter negotiations on the climate pact, but that idea was dismissed by the EU Commissioner for Climate Action Miguel Arias CaƱete, who said Friday that "the 29 articles of the Paris Agreement are not to be renegotiated, they are to be implemented". "I deeply disagree with the decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement". And in absence of any global climate control framework, the earth may warm up to 5 C or more, a Time report said quoting co-director of the MIT program John Reilly.

Only two countries - Nicaragua and Syria - are not part of the Paris accord.

Peduto's reaction was part of the widespread condemnation from USA civic, state and business leaders that came in reaction to Trump's decision to walk away from the landmark environmental accord.

President Trump has repeatedly called climate change a hoax.

"Yesterday, the government of a great nation renounced its climate obligations, but a nation is not only its government", Macron said.
