Sebastien Bourdais will not race again in 2017 following his horror crash during Saturday's qualifying session for the Indianapolis 500, but has had successful surgery on his fractured pelvis and hip.

The Dale Coyne driver was quickly evacuated by the emergency services to an Indianapolis hospital where doctors diagnosed him with multiple pelvic fractures and a right hip fracture.

"Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff", said vehicle owner Dale Coyne.

Dale Coyne Racing says James Davison will replace Bourdais in the 18-the auto, which will have to start in the 33rd spot because of the driver change.

Bourdais won four consecutive Champ Car titles from 2004 to 2007 with Newman/Haas Racing. Bourdais may have tried to catch the vehicle, but as the back end jumped back to the let, the rear wheels got hooked up again.
