Police said the suspects initially told them the white powder was cocaine, but when it tested negative for that drug, the pair revealed it was actually a risky opioid known as fentanyl.

Patrolman Chris Green entered the vehicle to stop the driver, identified as 25-year-old Justin Buckle, from destroying potential evidence, authorities reportedly said.

After arresting the men, Green and other officers carefully followed station protocol for handing drugs by wearing gloves and masks as they investigated the auto for evidence, authorities said.

Chris Green, an officer from East Liverpool in OH, collapsed after handling the substance, believed to be Fentanyl.

But the drug can get into the body just through contact with the skin "and he did this without thinking", Lane said.

Green overdosed at the station an hour later and was immediately treated with a dose of Narcan, a medication that blocks the effects of opioids.

That officer suffered from an apparent overdose and was given Narcan -the overdose reversal drug four times.

Captain Wright said Sunday Green was in good shape.

The drug threatens the safety of police and first responders.

"I value every employee in this city and, ultimately, their jobs fall on me". Green later overdosed on fentanyl. Inside was a Cleveland man who had warrants out for his arrest on drug charges.

"They called an ambulance for [Green] and the ambulance responded for him", Wright said.

Patrolman Green has since been released from the hospital and is expected to return to work shortly.

The cause of Green's condition was overdose of fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.

Speaking to local newspaper The Morning Journal, he said: "I started talking weird".

In East Liverpool, officials said Patrolman Green followed protocol in his encounter with the drug and is lucky to be alive.

"We changed our procedures to where we used to field test drugs", Wright added.

"If he would have been alone, he would have been dead", Lane said.

"We're going to try and seize that vehicle and destroy it".

Lane said the substances found in the vehicle will undergo testing but he has no idea when those results will be returned, noting he still has not received results from tests done on a traffic accident involving an overdosed couple and a little boy past year which made worldwide headlines.

Here's a frightening reminder of the dangers of fentanyl, a powerful opioid that can be lethal even in tiny amounts.
