North Korea's Latest Missile Launch Suggest Progress Towards ICBM
16 May 2017, 09:22 | Muriel Sparks
North Korea has released launch video of what is believed to be a risky and new long range ballistic missile, which it claims is capable of carrying a "heavy nuclear warhead".
Why does this test matter?
North Korea's state news agency identified the weapon as a Hwasong-12 "medium long-range" ground-to-ground ballistic missile. If confirmed, that would make it the highest test out of the seven Pyongyang has conducted this year.
Francois Delattre told reporters Monday that France favors "a strong, swift and firm reaction of the council" to North Korea's test on Sunday of a new longer-range ballistic missile, which he called "a serious threat to peace and security both in the region and the world".
South Korea has said it was unaware of what North Korea was referring to, while the Central Intelligence Agency and the White House declined to comment on the May 6 statement from North Korea's Ministry of State Security. And the United States rotates heavy bombers, including B-1s, B-2s and B-52s, through the island.
The missile - launched from a western area north of the capital Pyongyang - flew for about 30 minutes and reached an altitude of 1,240 miles before splashing into the sea east of the divided peninsula, Japanese officials said.
More missile tests were forewarned "until the USA and its vassal forces make a proper choice with reason". But Tong Zhao, an analyst with the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, said Sunday's test may give Pyongyang "a regional nuclear deterrence" option, meaning it might no longer need to pursue a weapon to reach as far as the United States mainland.
He said the missile's trajectory indicated the North was clearly testing the re-entry technology under flight environments that would be consistent for an ICBM.
The UN Security Council will hold closed consultations about the launch on Tuesday afternoon.
Hit-and-run suspect was deported 15 times in 15 years Border Patrol Spokesman Eduardo Olmos says the man responsible, Constantino Banda-Acosta, had been deported 15 times before. Banda-Acosta was charged with driving under the influence, hit and run with injury, and driving without a license.
It says the "era of strategic patience" with North Korea is over.
The isolated North is under multiple sets of United Nations sanctions over its nuclear and missile programmes, which have triggered global alarm.
On Sunday, the North successfully test-fired a new intermediate-range ballistic missile.
The launch on Sunday is an immediate challenge to South Korea's new leader, a liberal elected just five days earlier who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea. In February, Beijing banned imports of North Korean coal, its most important export.
The lawmaker reportedly said he strongly condemned the missile launch but added that he had "the impression that Pyongyang is looking forward to having a summit with Seoul".
"It's a challenging form of technology, and there's no indication yet in the public realm that North Korea has it", Martin Navias from the Center for Defense Studies at Kings College London told CNN. "And I think you'll see the worldwide community do that".
"There is enormous pressure when a missile re-enters the atmosphere".
Sunday's test missile flew 787 kilometers (489 miles) across North Korea and into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, according to state media, and it appeared to have struck near the eastern coast of Russian Federation. The missile firing took place Sunday, North Korea time, with the projectile landing in the sea between North Korea and Japan.
With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil - in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan - the President can not imagine that Russia is pleased.
