Elon Musk Has Tunnel Vision For Easing Traffic Congestion

14 May 2017, 03:05 | Ignacio Smith

Get ready to bypass congested city streets by putting your vehicle on Elon Musk's underground sled, which can travel at at 125mph. But this new video of the tunnel project released on Friday by Musk is fun. Cars will drive on and sink down, avoiding the hassle of building costly ramps that take up room in the city.

That would require some major advances in tunnel design (like reducing the diameter of these tunnels) and improvements in boring machinery.

The video above contains flashing lights, which has potential to induce motion sickness and/or seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy.

In the post, Musk said the sleds would automatically switch from tunnel to tunnel, making the commute from Westwood to LAX take five minutes. "Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging..."

In some ways Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, Tesla, co-founder of PayPal, and creator of the HyperLoop is just like us.

Rajnath calls for 'unity of purpose' to tackle Naxal terror
Short, medium and long-term policies need to be formulated at different levels to deal with the problem, the home minister said. The camps of the CRPF or Central Reserve Police Force should be adequately equipped with power and water and connectivity.

In what many have described as what a hyperspace looks like, the video doesn't show the exact speed of the "electric sled" so it's hard to gauge if it's really going 125 miles per hour.

The CEO posted the video to Instagram.

These clips don't guarantee the tunnels will turn out exactly how Musk has described - the Boring Company still has a long way to go. "Planning to jack this up by a factor of ten" reads a Tweet by Musk which speaks to one of the goals set for The Boring Company.

But transportation engineers have doubts about the feasibility of Musk's tunnel vision, and apart from benefiting the tunnel users, how much it would reduce traffic and improve transit overall. Full length of first tunnel will run from LAX to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and Sherman Oaks.

Musk discussed the concept in depth during a recent TED talk in Vancouver.
