Pizza Hut apologizes for post making fun of Palestinian hunger strike

Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan revealed Sunday that convicted Palestinian terrorist Marwan Barghouti, who has led a hunger strike in Israeli prisons, has been caught secretly eating.

Palestinians say the mass hunger strike is an attempt to improve conditions inside the jails and gain more family visits.

An unnamed IPS official told Channel 2 on Monday that video clips of Barghouti eating were obtained as part of an IPS scheme to induce the hunger strike's leaders to eat by hiding food in their cells.

Israeli officials have dismissed the strike as a bid by Barghouti to burnish his credentials in an internal Palestinian power struggle.

In parallel with the strike, local solidarity activities continue with the striking prisoners throughout the Palestinian governorates, while Arab and European cities and capitals witness other solidarity activities with the prisoners.

Fadwa said that publishing this fake, fabricated video only shows Israel's defeat in countering the battle of empty stomachs that the detainees are engaging in - she said that it just shows how weak Israel and the Israeli occupation are, and how strong is the will and the determination of the detainees.

Barghouti, 58, is serving five life terms after an Israeli court convicted him of directing attacks during a Palestinian uprising that killed five people. The video, purporting to show Barghouti snacking, was released Sunday.

Palestinians called for a boycott of Pizza Hut yesterday after the company's franchise in Israel was accused of mocking hunger-striking prisoners.

The post was taken down from their Hebrew Facebook page.

Pizza Hut said in its apology that the post was "completely inappropriate".

The post sparked fury on Palestinian social media, including calls to boycott the chain.

An image shared by Palestinians on Facebook to promote the boycott of Pizza Hut for its alleged Facebook post, with imagery of a prisoner and an Israeli watchtower emblazoned on the chain's famous logo.

"This hunger strike was never about the conditions of the convicted terrorists, which meet global standards", Erdan said.

Barghouti, according to polls, is the most popular political figure in the West Bank, and would replace Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas if elections were held today.
