Real Madrid are on the verge of signing Atletico Madrid left-back Theo Hernandez after the youngster passed his medical with the club on Monday.

Theo, who is playing for Alaves on a loan deal from Atletico de Madrid, is one of the most promising players in the Spanish La Liga and would be a good backup for Marcelo.

Such is the timing of the report, two days in advance of Atleti's second leg of their Champions League semi final against Real, it has provoked scepticism from Los Rojiblancos fans.

The France youth worldwide - whose brother Lucas plays in Atletico's first team - has impressed on loan at Alaves this season.

However, that has not stopped interest in his services and there have been strong reports recently that Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool have been keen on signing him up.

According to Sport, he's close to joining the Catalan giants even though Real Madrid were the first team to insist that they were ready to meet his €24m release clause.

All three sides are prepared to pay Hernandez's €24 million release clause.

"[Theo] will be the person to decide where he wants to go".

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said last week: "We have no intention of selling any player, but if another club comes with an offer which could be interesting to a player, they should talk to us".

Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid will negotiate Theo's move after Wednesday's game.
