Senate Confirms Ex-Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue As Agriculture Secretary

26 April 2017, 08:45 | Leonard Manning

The AVMA is pleased that a veterinarian, Secretary Sonny Perdue, DVM, was confirmed to the position of United States Secretary of Agriculture. Purdue was sworn in on Tuesday by Clarence Thomas, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump will sign the executive order while meeting at the White House with 15 farmers from around the country.

Sonny Perdue's father was, however, a farmer from Bonaire, GA.

When Perdue was nominated on January 18 and when he was confirmed on April 24, a total of 96 days passed without a leader of the USDA.

Senator Debbie Stabenow, the top Democrat on the agriculture committee, which needs to craft a new farm bill over the coming year, warned that Mr Trump's slow pace in nominating Mr Perdue and preparing his paperwork shows the president has treated rural America as "an afterthought".

Roberts could be seen on the Senate floor, hugging approving Democrats like Sen. The U.S. dairy industry claims Canada unfairly lowered the price of its own "ultra-filtered" to reduce American imports.

President Donald Trump's proposed budget would slash spending on agriculture research and other rural development.

"We have the Senate majority leader from Kentucky, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator who is a native of Kentucky, and the agriculture secretary who is a close neighbor". For months, rural America has not had a voice in this administration, and it shows.

All Republicans voted to confirm Perdue. Bernie Sanders, I-VT; Sen. Debbie Stabenow of MI, the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee. Kristin Gillibrand, D-NY.

The American Farm Bureau Federation welcomes the confirmation and swearing in of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. The agency has a hand in promoting US grain, meat and fiber to foreign buyers, regulates genetically engineered crops, inspects meatpacking plants and oversees the $71 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as the food stamp program. "He understands the impact farm labor shortages, trade agreements and regulations have on a farmer's bottom line and ability to stay in business from one season to the next".

"With his wide range of experience as a farmer, businessman, and governor, Secretary Perdue is well-positioned to lead the USDA in helping create more opportunity for USA producers", said Smith.

Perdue said he would work with Thune on his bill aimed at creating the Soil Health and Income Protection Program, which Thune said is part of his broader farm bill plan.

"The cooperative relationship we have developed over the years will prove a great asset as we work together to ensure our farmers, ranchers, foresters, agribusinesses, and consumers have the resources they need to prosper in today's competitive and global environment".

National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) President David Schemm said Perdue's farm experience would be a boon to agriculture. "We look forward to the important contributions he will make to the nation's vital agricultural industry in this new role".

"The USDA has been without a secretary for too long, but we are confident that Secretary Perdue will bring strong leadership to the department", the NCGA said. There are still more than 200 political appointments at USDA that have yet to be made. That begins with strong trade policy and continued investment in renewable fuels.
