'The Fate of the Furious' laps new films at box office

24 April 2017, 05:18 | Sue Hudson

Following its record-breaking debut last week, the adrenaline-fueled auto flick (and the eighth installment in the popular Universal action series) pulled in an estimated $38.7 million at the domestic box office, still managing to secure a first place finish despite the (expected) 61 percent drop in earnings - and marking yet another significant decrease in the franchise: Furious 7 earned $73 million in its second week alone. Domestically, the eighth installment added $38.7 million (a drop of 60.8%) to bring its total to $163.6 million, while internationally the film grossed another $163.4 million this weekend for an overseas total of $744.8 million. With an estimated worldwide total of $908.4 million in only its second week - and with the film yet to open in Japan - the film is expected to cross the $1 billion mark by its third week out.

Fourth place went to "Born in China", a Disney animal documentary, which debuted with $5.1 million. At least the Heigl movie had a low production budget ( about $12 million) to minimize losses. The Boss Baby is expected to earn $13 million over its third box office weekend, bringing its box office total to $137 million. In China, it took in an impressive $192.1 million alone.

"The film has been an absolute monster internationally where it has truly become a box office phenomenon as it approaches the one billion USA dollars mark worldwide after just two weeks in theaters", comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Xinhua.

"As the vehicle was spinning out of control from the PIT maneuver, Stephens pulled a pistol and shot himself in the head". Until the investigation is complete, Williams said, " we won't actually know where he was and what he was doing ".

Among the new movies, Warner Bros.' female-centric thriller Unforgettable, starring Katherine Heigl, is projected to gross roughly $2 million on Friday from 2,417 theaters for a forgettable $5 million-$6 million debut. And given the film's A- score on CinemaScore, it seems to have succeeded in doing so. The Terry George-directed film only pulled in an estimated $4 million dollar in 2,251 locations. But both are going to have a hard time dealing with the juggernaut that is Marvel, as "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be favored to hold at the No.1 spot for a second week.

DreamWorks Animation and Fox's "The Boss Baby" was on track to be second place again, bringing in an estimated 12.75 million USA dollars in its fourth weekend to push its gross earning to 136.99 million US dollars in North America.

As for the week's other major releases, they all performed poorly.
