Was Serena Williams pregnant when she won Australian Open?
Tennis star Serena Williams could take a pass on Wimbledon if physical changes from her pregnancy such as balance and blood flow affect her preparation and performance, researchers who study pregnancy in high-performing athletes said.
The Grand Slam victor, 35, teased the announcement on Snapchat Wednesday morning, posting a pic that was captioned, "20 weeks".
The Australian Open was her last competitive match, as in March she pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and a WTA Tour event in Miami.
Williams announced her engagement to the co-founder of the website Reddit, 33-year-old Alexis Ohanian, in December after dating for more than a year.
She then went on to win the Australian Open in January, beating sister Venus for her seventh title at Melbourne Park. In 2016, Williams shared another photo in which she's clad in a vibrant daffodil hue, that time while riding a horse on a tropical vacation she took after losing in the U.S. Open semifinals.
Pointing out that Court, fellow Australian great Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Belgian Kim Clijsters had returned from child birth to win grand slam titles, Williams' fans insist she can too.
Suspect in Facebook video killing shoots himself to death "As the vehicle was spinning out of control from the PIT maneuver, Stephens pulled a pistol and shot himself in the head". Until the investigation is complete, Williams said, " we won't actually know where he was and what he was doing ".
"Physically, if she has a normal, uneventful birth, the baby is a doll and she is not nursing, she could recover back to normal in about 4 to 6 weeks", said Dr. Bruce Young, Silverman Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University Langone Medical Center. Serena Williams has not played since, citing a knee injury.
The photo was later deleted, but a spokeswoman for Williams, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed that she was indeed pregnant.
Williams is the second leading women's tennis player to announce a pregnancy in the previous year.
Williams wouldn't be the first top women's player to return to competition after having a baby, but she would be the oldest. Only one woman has won more: Margaret Smith Court, who claimed part of her 24 during the amateur era.
During her 2017 SI shoot, Williams shared that she is a fan of one-piece suit styles. "I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive".
The next major tournament is the French Open, which starts on May 28.
