LA Dodgers To Unveil Jackie Robinson Statue This Weekend

16 April 2017, 02:25 | Elizabeth Houston

Major League Baseball's honoring the 70th anniversary of Jackie Robinson integrating the sport reminded me of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Ebbets Field and Hank Greenberg.

Twenty years ago today, baseball retired Robinson's No. 42, in a dramatic announcement madeat Shea Stadium in NY by Commissioner Bud Selig, who was flanked by Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson; and President Bill Clinton. Many historians believe Robinson's breakthrough was an early step that eventually led to other civil rights breakthroughs.

"It means to me that we talk about it every year [on] this day", Baker said, "but to me, no big deal, because every day is Jackie Robinson Day to me". "He would have wanted that very much", Sharon Robinson said.

The 6-foot-5 tall bronze statue, by Oakland sculptor Branly Cadet, depicts Robinson as a rookie in 1947 sliding into home plate, a nod to his aggressive baserunning.

Yet there was little question that the comments of the 70-year-old Campanis on "Nightline" reflected archaic stereotypes about the intelligence and capabilities of African-Americans.

"It's not about looking back so much as it is feeling inspired", Sharon Robinson said. "I want to get out and do more community stuff throughout the year, target the youth and let them know to not to give up on your dreams". An alumnus of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Matthew Robinson, will sing the National Anthem.

Reasons PepsiCo Is a Better Dividend Stock Than The Coca-Cola Company
The recycled content figure, said Greenpeace, now stands at 7 percent on average across Coca-Cola's global plastic bottle sales. What is Coca-Cola Amatil's value based on current earnings? The number of shares now owned by investors are 4.3 bln.

Needless to say, Robinson's legacy on Saturday was getting its proper respect all around baseball.

If there's one thing Major League Baseball has always done right, that is honoring the legacy of Jackie Robinson.

"A life is not important", one of the quotes reads, "except in the impact it has on other lives".

The family shared numerous photos of Robinson with sculptor Branly Cadet of Oakland, California.

While he would go on to star as a second baseman, Robinson made his debut on Opening Day at first.
