Russia responsible 'by proxy' for Syrian chemical attack says British Defence Secretary

13 April 2017, 02:09 | Leonard Manning

McMaster said there is no contradiction between comments by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who says IS must be defeated first, and Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations who contends that getting Assad out is a priority.

Trump ordered a cruise missile attack on a Homs airbase on Friday in response.

Tillerson would "deliver that clear and coordinated message to the Russians", he said.

USA officials said the presence of Russian advisers at the air field used to launch the attack raised questions about how they could not have known.

Tillerson stopped short of accusing the Russians of complicity.

U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson is then expected to deliver a message that the Kremlin faces worldwide isolation if it stands by the regime in Damascus.

The two generals said the missile strike was a "preplanned program" meant to slow gains by the Syrian military and to "strengthen the morale of terrorists and their supporters".

'I think the real failure here has been Russia's failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013, ' Tillerson said on ABC's This Week on Sunday.

The unidentified official said Russian forces also gathered information before an alleged attempt to cover up the usage of sarin gas by bombing a hospital treating victims.

Twitter Reacts To Chief Keef's Outrageous DUI Mugshot
A popular rapper was arrested Saturday afternoon in Miami Beach on a charge of driving under the influence, WPLG-TV reported. In addition, police stated in their report that Keef had "bloodshot watery droopy eyes and mush mouth".

The Kremlin meanwhile said Russia's president, Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart, agreed in a telephone call that that United States aggression against Syria was not permissible and violated worldwide law.

Putin said that the developments reminded him of the events of 2003, when representatives of the United States demonstrated in the UN Security Council toxic substances, allegedly found in Iraq to justify an invasion in that country.

Syrian army forces had been losing ground across the country until Russian Federation intervened militarily in September 2015, propping up Mr Assad and protecting its own interests in the region. "But we have got to have a strategy and a plan to follow through".

After previous gas attacks in Syria which the West blamed on the Assad regime, Mr Putin made a deal with former-President Barack Obama to scrap Syria's arsenal of deadly chemical weapons.

But Haley suggested there has been a shift in USA thinking. Because, if they're covering for Assad, then what are they really saying? "In no way do we see peace in that area with Assad as the head of the Syrian government".

But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use since. He also said the top USA priority in the region hasn't changed and remained the defeat of Islamic State militants. Lawmakers are divided over America's use of military force.

"After this the military campaign began in Iraq, which ended in a destruction of the country, an increase of the terrorist threat and the appearance of the Islamic State (IS) in the worldwide scene", Putin said.

But for Russian Federation or any other nation, McMaster said, supporting Syria's regime isn't in its best interest, and Russian Federation ultimately decides the kind of relationship it wants with the United States. "What Ambassador Haley pointed out is it's very hard to understand how a political solution could result from the continuation of the Assad regime", McMaster said.
