The reactions from Utah's Congressional members were a reversal from 2013, when Hatch, Chaffetz and Stewart said they did not support USA intervention in Syria's prolonged civil war. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is headquartered in Utah, has long relied on Hatch to serve as a representative and ambassador in Washington-a role that Romney views as important, and necessary.

The Atlantic cited six sources who said Romney has been talking with people in Utah and Washington, D.C., about running for the seat now occupied by Republican Orrin Hatch. "If I could get a really outstanding person to run for my position, I might very well consider [retiring]", Hatch said, adding, "Mitt Romney would be ideal". Mitt Romney, the one-time presidential nominee and leading Trump critic, is exploring a run for Hatch's Senate seat.

Utah Republican Party Chairman James Evans downplayed a potential Romney bid, casting it as speculative at this point.

The former MA governor and 2012 GOP presidential candidate is reportedly exploring a run in Utah, according to The Atlantic.

Despite Senator Hatch still deciding if he'll run for an eighth term rumors about Romney are flying. He is the longest-serving Republican in the Senate - first elected in 1976.

UN chief at Iraq camp urges more aid for people of Mosul
Townsend has delegated the right to approve bombings further down the hierarchy to allow a quick response to help Iraqi troops. Earlier this week, the Pentagon said it would deploy another 200 to 300 USA troops to help liberate the city.

Nevertheless, sources close to Romney have said that he is strongly considering a bid, and has already held conversations with both Hatch and House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about his future prospects as a Senator. Obviously I'm an Orrin Hatch supporter, ' McConnell told reporters in the Capitol Friday. In a statement to The Atlantic, Hatch said he was "giving careful consideration as to whether I will seek reelection" and has "yet to make a final decision".

Josh Romney may have other plans as he brushed off his mother's comments saying, "The thought of running for office doesn't sound very fun".

And Hatch moved to snuff out the fire. "All doors are open", Romney told the newspaper then, after describing the 2018 Senate race as one that is "going to be interesting".

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. had indicated interest, but has reportedly been tapped by Trump to be the US ambassador to Russian Federation. "And I think that's what this is all about", Evans said. President Trump, in contrast, has only ever won 45.5% of the Beehive state.

Perry said the time for a Senate campaign to get up and running is approaching fast. "And that is the right way to approach this", Perry said.
