Why scrapping the Clean Power Plan will not help the coal industry

Trump takes aim at Obama's efforts to curb global warming

"As the U.S. is, historically, the largest polluter, its failure to meet worldwide commitments will undermine the Paris Agreement that was signed by 195 countries in 2015 to fight climate change". Under any reasonable scenario, achieving climate objectives depends heavily on reducing coal consumption.

The New York Times believes the country with the worst climate record is poised to become the world's top environmental champion, thanks to President Donald Trump's global warming skepticism.

"Granite Staters know that protecting our environment while building a stronger, more affordable energy future is critical for our families and our businesses".

Mr. Trump's executive order attempts to undo the Clean Power Plan, a not-yet-implemented EPA rule that aims for a 32 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants by 2030.

Kelly said following Trump's executive order for the rollback that the lawsuit probably will be dropped. Burning coal is twice as carbon-intensive as natural gas and is a main contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions.

In other words, one of the world's most profitable companies - one which spent decades funding climate change denialism despite knowing that its business model endangered the entire planet - likes the agreement because it sidestepped efforts to hold those largely responsible for the climate crisis accountable to its victims.

Whether Trump understands this or not, he's doing a great disservice to unemployed coal miners by assuring them his executive order will get them back to work. It won't.

While Trump blamed "job-killing regulations", coal jobs have been declining for most of the past 30 years as mines have automated and competing energy sources have fallen in price.

UN chief at Iraq camp urges more aid for people of Mosul
Townsend has delegated the right to approve bombings further down the hierarchy to allow a quick response to help Iraqi troops. Earlier this week, the Pentagon said it would deploy another 200 to 300 USA troops to help liberate the city.

That put a lot of focus on Tuesday's executive order.

Rick Curtsinger, a spokesperson for Wyoming coal giant Cloud Peak Energy, said lifting that Obama moratorium allows three potential projects in Wyoming's Powder River Basin to start moving through the leasing process again. Morrisey said he thinks the president's action can help his state's hard-hit mining industry rebound.

"If the Trump Administration decides to dismantle these carbon pollution standards and then either chooses not to limit carbon pollution from power plants, or chooses to do it in a way that is ineffective and weak, then, yes, you can expect to see challenges", Spalding said. "I would say this is mainly a reprieve for the next four years", she said. The moratorium on the leasing of federally controlled coal was created to keep America's largest source of coal firmly in the ground.

In 2008 there were 88,000 coal miners in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

"Those decisions are being made at the state level and plant by plant", said Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen, who said his group is "continuing to work aggressively to retire dirty coal plants".

"What comes next is a much more humble view of what the EPA's response to Carbon dioxide is within the Clean Air Act", EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt told CNBC on Tuesday. "I suggested that [Trump] temper his expectations".

"This executive order will not bring back the coal industry".

"Coal is not coming back", Van Noppen added. NPR reports that the solar industry now employs twice as many Americans as the coal industry.
