The rejection also comes after the city's Board of Aldermen didn't bother putting up to public vote a plan to build a riverfront stadium for the now-departed St. Louis Rams, knowing the support wasn't there.

Voters passed Proposition 1 for MetroLink expansion with 60.4 percent of the vote, but voted against Proposition 2, with 52.8 percent voting "no".

The new stadium would have near Busch Stadium, home of baseball's Cardinals, and the Scottrade Center, home of the NHL's Blues. It then will demolish Qualcomm, split the cost of the new $200 million stadium with San Diego State, add mixed-use development and a 55-acre riverfront park and still leave space for a potential NFL stadium if that league opts to return.

MLS leaders have expressed strong interest in St. Louis, but only if voters agreed to public funding.

Earlier in the year MLS said the timeline was for meetings and evaluations of the 12 expansion candidates to take place during the first half of 2017 and two expansion teams to be announced before the end of 2017 and begin play in 2020.

Cattle call: Heifers escape from St. Louis slaughterhouse
Susie Coston, the director of Farm Sanctuary , a New York-based animal rescue organization said: 'It's just so incredibly sad. News 4 reported that a herd of cattle escaped from star packing company, located in the 3800 block of Cote Brilliante.

SC STL chairman Paul Edgerly said people "worked hard" and that the group was "disappointed for St. Louis". FS Investors told San Diego media that MLS won't make its decision until after the November 7 vote.

Dan Courtemanche, Major League Soccer's executive vice president of communications, released a statement via Twitter.

As the ownership group of Phoenix Rising FC pursues a Major League Soccer franchise, St. Louis may be out of luck in chasing the MLS.

The land became available when the Chargers announced their plans to move to Los Angeles.
