Johnson wins Match Play to sweep World Golf Championships
30 March 2017, 01:36 | Sue Hudson
In a series of fitness videos for the Golf Channel website in America, Dustin Johnson swims like Michael Phelps, dunks like an National Basketball Association hotshot and gets into stretching positions that would please a top gymnast.
The 32-year-old reigning US Open champion chalked up a third straight tournament with his 1-up win against the up-and-coming Spaniard, and in doing so also became the first player to win all four World Golf Championships.
After winning his last two starts, Johnson made it three in a row by outlasting Jon Rahm one up to emerge triumphant on Sunday.
"I didn't give him any holes, except for 10 (where) I three-putted".
"That was a tough day, a long day", Johnson said. But I'll probably - I'll get there Tuesday night, I would imagine, if I'm going to go.
The in-form American also has six wins in total since capturing the U.S. Open previous year as the Masters loom.
Johnson tapped in a 30-inch putt for a 1-up victory, completing a dominant week in which he never trailed in the 112 holes he played over seven matches.
Rahm got back to one down heading down the 18th, and possible extra holes looked to be on the cards until he fluffed a chip from the edge, and Johnson made par to halve the hole and take the title.
In the third and fourth place deciding match Bill Haas defeated Hideto Tanihara 2&1 - but there was a secondary consolation for the Japanese golfer. "What I saw this week, I just watched the same guy I've watched for five years now", he said.
"It's beating", he said Saturday, pausing for effect before adding, "Not very fast". He also beat Alex Noren in the round of 16.
Johnson won the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2013, the Cadillac Championship in 2015, and has now won three of the last four - the 2016 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship (formerly known as Cadillac), and the 2017 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship. He won four holes between the 10th and 16th. Johnson's win in the final match came against the rising star, and future Ryder Cup match-play threat, Jon Rahm.
"It's impossible to win every week".
None of his first five matches went longer than 16 holes until Sunday, when Johnson faced his first threat of the week.
"I confirmed what I already thought, that I belong here", he said, not in a cocky manner, but with great confidence.
The 22-year-old, who was the world's top-ranked amateur while studying at Arizona State University, is now 25th in the world after winning his first PGA Tour title in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January.
During Sunday afternoon's final match with Rahm, Johnson was in total control and led 5 up through eight holes.
Johnson earns $1.66 million by winning the Dell Match Play, while Rahm will take home $1.045 million, per SB Nation's Brendan Porath. His wish came two weeks early. I made a good par on nine, great up and down on 10. "So I'm just going to keep working on it". Johnson gave himself some breathing room with a birdie on No. 12 to go 4 up again, but Rahm continued his comeback, closing the deficit to one hole with a birdie on No. 16. "I'm proud of the way I played, the way I hung in there".
