Clashes in Syria capital after surprise rebel assault
22 March 2017, 12:41 | Leonard Manning
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict, said at least 143 air raids were conducted by the Syrian army on rebel held eastern parts of Damascus, mostly targeting Jobar, since the rebels launched their offensive.
Dozens of regime forces were killed in the fighting, and Sunday saw the biggest clashes in Damascus for years.
The attack came just days before a fresh round of UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva aimed at ending Syria's six-year war.
The attackers utilized numerous guerilla warfare techniques, including auto bombs, suicide attacks and the use of secret tunnels.
Bashar al-Assad's government has endeavoured to maintain a veneer of normality in the capital as his forces bomb opposition areas on the edges and suburbs of the city.
Rebels and allied jihadists, led by former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front, early Sunday attacked government positions in east Damascus, initially scoring gains.
Tahrir al-Sham and the rival jihadist group, Islamic State, are excluded from the truce.
The source said that the situation in Jobar region has now normalized.
Control of Jobar has been divided between moderate rebels, government troops, and jihadists for more than two years.
Government forces responded with almost a dozen air strikes on Jobar, he added.
The most recent fighting has focused on the areas around Qabun and Barza, which the army has isolated from the rest of the main rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta and the eastern districts of Damascus.
Rebel fighters have been granted safe passage to insurgent-held areas of northern Syria under such agreements. In December, the regime retook Aleppo, Syria's largest city before the war started in 2011.
Meanwhile, Russia's foreign ministry on Monday said it had summoned Israel's ambassador over air strikes close to Moscow's forces near the historic Syrian city of Palmyra.
It has undertaken a relentless bombing campaign of residential areas to force rebels to surrender and agree to deals that push them out of these areas.
Almost half a million people have been killed and half of the country's pre-war population has been displaced.
