American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines announced Monday that all Tuesday flight operations in and out of New York City airports have been canceled.

Northeast braces for massive late winter stormAccording to the airline-tracking website FlightAware, more than 5,000 Tuesday flights were canceled. That means airports from New York City, Boston, and Washington D.C. could be shutdown until Wednesday.

United Airlines, the dominant carrier at Newark Liberty International Airport, has yet to cancel Tuesday departures but that's nearly certain to change.

Even more flights are expected to be canceled on Tuesday, when Upstate New York and other areas along the East Coast are expected to get hit with heavy snowfall.
