It was the first time the games would be held in the country.

Durban has been stripped of the 2022 Commonwealth Games after failing to meet key obligations.

Durban was awarded the Games in 2015 as the only city to make a confirmed bid but an announcement about it pulling out is expected later on Monday.

As early reports indicate, the city of Durban has lost the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"The CGF will continue to have an open dialogue with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and the Republic of South Africa and remains committed to realising the shared ambitions of a future Commonwealth Games in Africa".

News that Durban had pulled out came on the day the Queen started the countdown to the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia, by launching a baton relay at Buckingham Palace.

But ever since it won the games as the sole bidder in September 2015, Durban missed deadlines to provide the financial guarantees.

"This is a huge disappointment for us and for the whole African continent".

She worked with the Rome 2004 and Turin 2006 Olympic bids and also managed PR & media for Dr. Jacques Rogge during his campaign for the presidency.

But the BBC report that Durban are about to bow out leaving the way clear for another option with Liverpool a prime candidate to step in.

Liverpool has an expressed an interest in staging the event.

"I am very confident that the city will be able to cope with the demands of holding the Games", he told the Liverpool Echo, saying it would "give us a great opportunity to regenerate the north of Liverpool and create a lasting legacy".

"Besides, it would have made it increasingly hard for another potential host city if we had delayed the process any further", said Sam.
