Winter is returning as cold snap, snow expected

The National Weather Service's Upton office on Thursday issued a winter weather advisory from 10 p.m. Thursday through 2 p.m. Friday. There could be hazardous or slippery travel due to snow, temperatures around freezing, and visibility up to half a mile at times.

The National Weather Service is also calling for a chance of snow again on Tuesday. According to Hotz, there is an air mass in Canada clocking in at below zero degrees that will be coming into area early next week.

While we enjoy a few days of spring-like temperatures, winter may try and make a return late this week and into the weekend.

Temperatures will begin to drop this afternoon after reaching a projected high of 53 in Newton.

The winter storm watch is in effect from 1 a.m.to 4 p.m.

Sunday night: A chance of rain before 2am, then a chance of rain and snow between 2am and 5am, then a chance of snow after 5am.

Meteorologist Mike Dangelo said overnight rain will likely turn into snow as the sun rises and continue into the early afternoon.

Should storms develop, they could become severe with the main risks being large hail and damaging winds. And, forecasters said, it is less likely that fast-moving systems can accumulate enough moisture to create much precipitation. The last one-inch-plus snowfall at Baltimore-Washington International Airport was roughly one year ago, March 3-4, 2016.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 12. The weekend's chillier forecast follows a sunny Thursday with a high of 55.

Total snowfall for the season to date in Newark, as of February 28, was 20.6 inches, or 2.4 inches below normal.
