Last month, Boeing gave us journalists a sneak peek at the first MAX 9 while it was under construction.
Certification of the MAX 8 comes two days after the next re-engined 737 variant, the MAX 9, rolled out.

One early-delivery customer is due to be Norwegian Air Shuttle subsidiary Norwegian Airlines International, which plans to launch transatlantic services with 737 MAX 8s in June from four Irish, one Scottish and at least one Norwegian destination to three airports in the Northeastern U.S.
Following a rigorous certification process, the FAA granted Boeing an Amended Type Certificate for the 737 MAX 8, verifying the design complies with required aviation regulations and is safe and reliable.
According to Boeing, the 737 MAX 8 reduces fuel use and Carbon dioxide emissions by an additional 14 per cent over today's most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft.
Indonesian low-priced carrier Lion Air is to be the launch customer for the 737 Max 9.
The 737 MAX family of aircraft is created to offer customers exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that will open up new destinations in the single-aisle market.
Boeing will later produce a smaller MAX 7 and then the MAX 200, a high-density version of the MAX 8 that has an extra exit door and is created to seat 200 passengers in one class.
According to the company, "The 737 MAX is the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing history, accumulating more than 3,600 orders to date from 83 customers worldwide".
