Steven Spielberg's Next Movie Stars Tom Hanks And Meryl Streep

Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep to Star in Pentagon Papers Drama From Steven Spielberg

Hollywood's reigning king and queen, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, are about to star in their first movie together.

Hanks is set to play Post editor Ben Bradlee opposite Streep as the newspaper's publisher Katharine Graham. Of course, it was about the US government's military involvement in Vietnam, that's why the future political thriller based on these facts will be so actual in our times.

After military analyst Daniel Ellsberg provided portions of the Pentagon Papers to Bradlee and the Post, which printed them in June 1971, the Attorney General's office demanded the newspaper cease publishing articles about the documents.

Spielberg will also produce with Amy Pascal and Kristie Macosko Krieger, with Rachel O'Connor, Adam Somner and Tim and Trevor White as executive producers, according to Deadline. Spielberg has previously directed Hanks on four separate occasions, in Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal and 2015's Bridge of Spies.

Syrian peace talks end with clear agenda, says United Nations envoy
A shaky ceasefire has been in place since December and separate talks in Kazakhstan, sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran, are dealing with military matters.

The Pentagon Papers was the name of a classified study which revealed unreported facts about a secret escalation of more than 500,000 troops by 1968.

What's not quite clear is why the film is focused on the Washington Post rather than the New York Times, which led the way on reporting the story and was the first to face a federal court injunction by the Nixon administration.

Streep was branded an "overrated actress" by U.S. President Donald Trump after she criticised him for belittling a disabled journalist at the Golden Globes in January.

Hanks, Streep and Spielberg boast a combined 9 Oscars between them.
