Police said Jean Young Haley and Martha Young Williams died after they fell outside Ms Haley's house in Barrington, Rhode Island, and became stranded in the cold.

The Barrington Police Department released a statement Saturday saying the sisters were found in front of Jean's home Saturday morning; Martha appeared to have fallen while walking to her auto, and Jean was found in the garage, having apparently tripped on the way inside while attempting to call for help.

The force said the twins had gone for an evening out with a younger sister, aged 89, who had already left for home when they got into trouble at around 8.30pm.

John Haley said the women, who were healthy and active, were outside for about 11 hours before they were found. The sisters were immediately transported to Rhode Island Hospital where they later died.
