Google’s streaming TV service may debut today
Since its inception, YouTube in particular has had copyright issues with the TV and movies studios and music labels.
At an event today in Los Angeles, the Google subsidiary unveiled YouTube TV, billing it as a way to reimagine television for the YouTube generation. Hulu is planning is own over-the-top service this year, with CBS, Fox and Disney - including ESPN -among the networks which have signed on. Here no doubt to take on the likes of PlayStation Vue, DirecTV NOW, Sling TV and similar, YouTube TV gives subscribers access to major networks like ABC, CBS, and FOX, as well as major sports networks, an unlimited cloud DVR, and even six accounts under a single monthly subscription. Recode reports that Google's artificial intelligence software will power the service's recommendation system. A study from research firm GfK said a quarter of American homes don't subscribe to a pay TV service, with 6 percent only using the internet to watch their favorite shows on a TV using a device like Apple TV or Roku.
A YouTube TV membership costs $35 a month and there are no long-terms commitments. Add-ons such as Showtime will also be available.
YouTube does not have the broadcasting right from Turner to show some National Basketball Association games, the NCAA Tournament and some Major League Baseball. Typing in "time travel", for instance, will pull up all available content with that theme.
You'll be able to record live shows and save them to the app without storage limits, where you can keep them for up to nine months.
"Millennials love great TV content, but what we've seen is they don't want to watch it in the traditional setting", Wojcicki said. Local news programming from network affiliates will also be included, according to Robert Kyncl, YouTube's chief business officer.
After more than a decade, YouTube is now considered to be a significant rival to traditional television. But based on what we know right now, it looks like a compelling cord-cutting option with features including a DVR subscription and a sub-$40 price point that take it a cut above the competition.
