President Trump on Friday lashed out in a tweet aimed at those critical of his ties to the Kremlin-namely, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who 13 years ago took a photograph with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In one other sign of a stiffening attitude, two officials said the administration had offered the job of top Russian Federation adviser at the National Security Council to Russian Federation scholar Fiona Hill, a leading Putin critic. "We should start an immediate investigation into [Schumer] and his ties to Russian Federation and Putin", wrote Trump. Even though the Washington Post story about Sessions' meetings with Sergei Kislyak came from Justice Department officials, Trump's still wildly lashing out, this time with a photo involving coffee and donuts.

"We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russian Federation and Putin", Trump wrote in the tweet. Sessions may find himself without his party's safety net - something the GOP has so far been willing to provide the Trump administration. But he stopped by New York City to attend the opening of a new Lukoil gas station.

Asked about possible Trump campaign contacts with Russian Federation during his January confirmation hearing, Sessions said he had "been called a surrogate a time or two in that campaign".

Sessions said he met with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in his official capacity as a member of the Armed Services Committee.

In a tweet on January 30, Trump said that "big problems at airports" were caused partially by "the tears of Senator Schumer".

In Congress, meanwhile, at least five standing committees and one subcommittee are in various stages of investigations into Russian interference in the USA election and reported contacts between Trump associates and Russian officials.
