Is there mail on President's Day? A look at what's closed

In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect, moving numerous holidays to Mondays instead of the proper or traditional day.

Financial markets are closed in the the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will observe the President's holiday. Buses are running, but schools are closed.

On Monday, Santa Clarita celebrates Presidents Day, a holiday originally only dedicated to the first president of the United States of America. Others are trying to make You're Fired- Trump's catchphrase from The Apprentice- trend.

Mount Vernon, George Washington's northern Virginia estate, is also offering free admission for the President's Day holiday.

Because most government offices are closed, garbage pick-up and street sweeping could be pushed back to Tuesday. City, state and federal offices stayed open last week (except state courts, which closed along with county offices).

In fact, the federal holiday is still called "Washington's Birthday", which was actually on February 22, 1732.

While Washington's birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until the 20th Century, Congressional leaders moved to a pass the Monday Holiday Law in 1968 to "provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays". In addition, some recognize the day as Abraham Lincoln's birthday as well, since he was also born in February.

Of the most recent US Presidents, who do you think was the best leader?

Many historians consider Washington and Lincoln our greatest presidents (although you might get an argument from the present occupant of the White House). It's a federal holiday, but not an official state holiday.

Washington should have a standalone holiday and if the country wished to extend a similar honor to Lincoln, it can be done with enough separation so as not to overlap each other.

But dozens of states celebrate the presidential legacy, or the hope of getting a really great deal on a auto, on the same day.

If Washington's birthday were to be commemorated on the second Monday of February, then March 4, the original inauguration day for presidents, would work and would serve as a reference to another facet of our national history.

However the Department of Defense issued a President's Day tweet honoring our first commander in chief and his successors.
