Andrew Puzder, President Trump's nominee as US Secretary of Labor, has withdrawn from consideration, bowing to public and political pressure.

"No matter how you cut it, there is no worse pick for labor secretary than Andrew Puzder, and I'm encouraged my Republican colleagues are starting to agree", the New York Democrat said.

With his confirmation relying on little room for defections, CNN reported that "a senior GOP source" told the White House earlier that the Senate had four firm Republican no votes and possibly up to 12. They also pointed to the fact that "Puzder employed an undocumented housekeeper for several years and failed to pay related taxes". That would have put the nomination in jeopardy, since Senate Republicans have only a 52-48 majority and Democrats are solidly opposed. Additionally, a prominent conservative publication announced its opposition to the pick on Wednesday, saying that Puzder's support for more legal immigration is at odds with Trump's position.

Puzder went on to thank President Trump for the nomination as well as his family and his "many supporters - employees, businesses, friends and people who have voiced their praise and hopeful optimism for the policies and new thinking I would have brought to America as Secretary of Labor".

"Workers across the country made their voices heard, made it clear they want a true champion for them at Labor", said Sen.

In the Business Insider interview, Puzder said he was open to automation in his restaurants, especially with the rising cost of employees due to increases in minimum wage.

"Through this appointment he's shown he was trying to make it harder for workers to get ahead and stay ahead", he said of President Trump.

DHS: 75 percent of those arrested in immigration raids were 'criminal aliens'
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents resulted in far fewer arrests than national raids under the Obama administration. Recent raids on the part of U.S.

Allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-wife from 30 years ago also surfaced when a videotape of her appearance on Oprah Winfrey's talk show surfaced.

"If I had half the transgressions of Andy Puzder I never would have gotten through", he said.

Puzder is CEO of the CKE restaurant chain, which includes Hardee's and Carl Jr's, and the idea of a fast food boss protecting workers' rights had raised eyebrows from the start.

"I've expressed my concerns about a number of issues", Maine Republican Sen.

He also said in the statement he and his wife paid back taxes for it. Puzder withdrew amid skepticism from Republican senators.

Puzder revealed to a Senate committee this month that he was unaware of the woman's immigration status when he hired her.

The news of Puzder comes less than two days after National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigned amid reports that he misled senior White House officials about his conversations with Russian Federation.
