New Jersey ranks 29th on list of number of structurally deficient bridges

16 February 2017, 01:05 | Ignacio Smith

Released by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, the report points to more than 1,200 bridges across the state as being structurally deficient.

Pennsylvania actually improved from the 2016 report, with 4,506 bridges deemed "structurally deficient" this year, as opposed to 4,783 last year.

Once again, Pennsylvania is among the nation's leaders in structurally deficient bridges, according to an annual report. The analysis of federal data by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association found about 1,900 structurally deficient bridges are on interstate highways. If that's all the improvement that can be gained in 12 months, the group says it would take more than 20 years to improve or replace all of the bridges on the list. "It is outdated, overused, underfunded and in desperate need of modernization".

Iowa was the state with the highest number of structurally deficient bridges at 4,968, while Rhode Island was the state with the highest percentage at 25%.

While these bridges may not be imminently unsafe, they are in need of attention. The District of Columbia (9), Nevada (31), DE (43), Hawaii (64) and Utah (95) have the least.

The top three most traveled deficient bridges in the state are in Union and Essex Counties, according to the study.

Although structurally deficient bridges may still be safe to drive on, they have defects or fix needs that can cause speed or weight limits to be imposed.
