Germany picks Frank-Walter Steinmeier to be president

14 February 2017, 12:48 | Clarence Schmidt

Mr. Steinmeier came to Berlin as the chief of staff to former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, overseeing German foreign intelligence in the years after 9/11.

His predecessor, Joachim Gauck, steps down on 18 March.

Although the president in Germany does not have a great executive power, he is still an authority. "We give others courage, not because everything is good, but because we have shown that it can be better", he said.

He is aware of the fact that the world is going through tough times, his democratic country will try to create stability.

Regarding his profile and leadership, Steinmeier stands out for his pragmatism with the media and his recent harsh statements against his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, which he described as a 'hate preacher'.

When asked in August about the rise of right-wing populism in Germany and elsewhere, Mr Steinmeier criticised those who "make politics with fear".

Toyota RAV4 Adventure is Ready for Fun
Set to arrive in U.S. dealerships in September, the RAV4 Adventure is actually more than just some clever badging and marketing. Inside, the RAV4 Adventure benefits from unique furnishings including a leather-wrapped shift knob and special door-sill trim.

He cited as examples the nationalist Alternative for Germany party, the promoters of Britain's exit from the European Union, and "the hate preachers, like Donald Trump at the moment in the United States". Schulz will face off against sitting chancellor Angela Merkel, who is running for the CDU/CSU bloc.

"I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the occasion of your election as President of the Federal Republic of Germany", said President Aliyev in his letter. He returned to the Foreign Ministry when Ms. Merkel formed another so-called grand coalition with the SPD in 2013.

In his acceptance speech, Steinmeier said Germany should be an "anchor of hope" while democratic institutions were under threat across the globe.

The president used to be a foreign minister and is very popular. Two main parties in the coalition hold 923 seats in the assembly, which should assure Steinmeier's election.
