The acclaimed British director spoke during the 2017 BAFTA Awards as he accepted his award for Best British Film for I, Daniel Blake, a movie about a middle-aged carpenter who suddenly finds himself needing help from state after injuring himself but soon gets caught up in the red tape and bureaucracy of a system that does not work.
La La Land already is a dominant force at the Oscars, with 14 nominations. BAFTAs 2017 will be held at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Prince William and his wife Kate were due on the red carpet at London's Royal Albert Hall, along with nominees including Meryl Streep, Casey Affleck and Australia's Nicole Kidman. It also has won seven Golden Globes.

The best actor Bafta award went on Sunday to Casey Affleck, for his role in the American drama "Manchester By The Sea", beating Ryan Gosling who was nominated for "La La Land".
The latter film, about female mathematicians working at Nasa, is up for best adapted screenplay at the Baftas.
The film - an unflinching examination of life in the United Kingdom benefits system - beat other titles such as Denial, Notes On Blindness and the JK Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
Best-actress contenders were Stone; Amy Adams for "Arrival"; Emily Blunt for "The Girl on the Train"; Meryl Streep for "Florence Foster Jenkins"; and Natalie Portman for "Jackie".
