Bobcat named 'Ollie' missing after escaping at Smithsonian National Zoo
A 25-pound bobcat escaped the National Zoo on Monday and is still on the loose.
Ollie the bobcat disappeared from the Smithsonian's National Zoo on Monday morning.
Zoo officials began searching the area immediately, though have yet to locate the 7-year-old bobcat.
The staff is working to attract Ollie back to her enclosure and believe she may return to her familiar grounds for food and shelter. Bobcats are not known to be aggressive to humans, so zoo officials said there is no imminent danger to the public.
Dimitri Payet completes exit from West Ham United Amidst this joy and promise, Payet joined his fellow Frenchies with the national team for the Euro 2016 tournament they hosted. The Frenchman exits the Hammers after scoring 18 goals and assisting a further 25 strikes in 66 appearances for the club.
She said the zoo has placed traps to capture Ollie, if she returns. Officials believe she likely climbed through an opening in the mesh net that encloses her habitat. The likelihood that we get her back? As with the rest of her species, she runs at 30 miles and is an excellent climber, meaning recapturing her may prove hard.
Although bobcats are not typically a threat to people, they will attack dogs and cats as well as mice, squirrels, rabbits and small deer.
The bobcat was seen with two others at 7:30 a.m. during a routine count.
The most recent animal to escape the zoo was an agouti, which is a small mammal, in July 2015, a zoo spokeswoman said. Rusty the red panda was found a mile from the Zoo in Rock Creek Park after escaping overnight in June 2013. In a news release, the zoo says it has received tips from neighbors that suggest the 25-pound cat may be in the Woodley Park or Cleveland Park neighborhoods of Northwest DC.
